The art of recycling
21/05/09With the constant floods in the last few months all over Brazil, it has become more than necessary to discuss with our communities the question of the environment. We are, after all, part of this environment and not separate from it. We belong to a complex ecosystem and everything we do affects that system, and vice-versa. In Pratinha, each time it rains the rubbish spreads through the streets as the local bay overflows. A large part of this rubbish is plastic bottles. I am still surprised at why, in a place that is abundant with wonderful fruits, most people chose to drink artificial fizzy drinks! But that is the reality - so we need to dispose of these bottles in a more organized and resposible fashion. There is no great recycling project here in Belém, just a few small, localized efforts. In Pratinha the Anglican Church decided transform the bottles in art. Nazaré Farias has always had a gift for creating dolls and toys from everything she found. After reading a few magazines and with the support of the Church, she began creating cowns and fridge magnets from plastic bottles. At the end of 2008 she exposed her work at a Craft Fair at the Cathedral, and today she teaches children and adolescents in the neighbourhood. Here the children learn a skill, earn some small change, and learn to take care of their environment.
